Physical Therapy after Total Knee Replacement ~ Dr Shalu Jangra (Hindi)

Watch out benefits of physical therapy after Total Knee Replacement by Dr Shalu Jangra (Physical Therapist, Jindal Hospital).

Once the patient return home, exercise is still important to prevent complications and to build strength, as well as improve the motion of their knee. This therapy will help the patient to increase their activity level to what it was before surgery.

The patient’s leg muscles probably feel weak because they did not use them much with their knee problems. The total Knee Replacement corrected that knee problem. A regular exercise program will strengthen their muscles as well as help their knee bend and straighten. The success of therapy will largely depends on the patient’s commitment to follow the exercise program developed by their therapists.

The patient should exercise two to three times a day, every day, after surgery. Follow specific directions given to the patient by their doctor, nurse or therapist.

The patient can complete each exercise 10 times. If they are comfortable with the exercise, they can increase the repetitions by five times more too.

Besides the exercise program, the patient must have time for walking too. The walking may build their strength and endurance. They can walk around their home three to five times each day. Their trips to the bathroom or kitchen are not enough for regaining knee’s motion or their strength.

Benefits of Total Knee Replacement ~ Dr Amit Bhutani (English)

What are benefits of Total Knee Replacement by replacing the worn-out cartilage according to Dr Amit Bhutani (Orthopaedic Surgeon, Jindal Hospital)? When pain killers, injections and physiotherapy fail to manage knee pains, it is usually recommend total knee replacement (TKR) surgery for getting rid of excessive pain and aid for living normal life.

Due to osteoarthritis or wear and tear, the cartilage beaks down, causing bones to rub against each other. The rubbing causes severe pain and swelling, making it impossible for patients to walk. At this stage, the total knee replacement is recommended.

In total knee replacement surgery, Doctor replaced the worn-out cartilage by artificial Knee made up of chromium-cobalt. Metal components are impacted onto the bone or fixed using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement. Several international studies have indicated that this knee will last for 10 years. This surgery will cost patients between Rs. 1.2 and 1.6 lakh (Cost depend on specific City and Hospital) for one knee replacement. Now, we have better artificial knee, due to this, patient can move his or her leg up to 135 degree after surgery.

After surgery, patient should take all necessary precaution to avoid infections up to 2 weeks.

Patients typically undergo several weeks of physical therapy and occupational therapy to restore motion and strength. Complete recovery from the operation involving return to full normal function may take three months.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Knee Resurfacing Surgery (MIKRS) for Knee Treatment

When pain killers, injections and physiotherapy fail to manage knee pains, orthopaedic surgeons usually recommend total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. However, patients staring at the prospect of undergoing TKR due to osteoarthritis, now have the option to postpone the surgery for a decade.

The implant effectively replaces the worn-out cartilage, which is the tissue that cushions the two bones in the knee joint. Due to wear and tear, the cartilage beaks down, causing bones to rub against each other. The rubbing causes severe pain and swelling, making it impossible for patients to walk. At this stage, doctors recommend total knee replacement.

A relatively new procedure, minimally invasive knee resurfacing surgery (MIKRS), promises better management of failed knees. MIKRS involves inserting a chromium-cobalt implant in between the knee joints after making a 5-7 cm incision.

“Instead of total knee replacement, patients now have the option of minimally invasive surgery. We conducted a surgery on a 45-year-old woman Lakshmi Devi, and she has recovered well. This surgery will be a great alternative for total knee replacement,” said Dr. Prabhat Lakkireddi, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals. He added that total knee replacement involves a lot of bone cutting, use of bone cement, blood loss and a significant post-operative recovery time. However, patients opting for MIKRS need not face the above factors, he said.

“Several international studies have indicated that the implant will last for 10 years. This surgery will cost patients between Rs. 1 and 1.2 lakh, while total knee replacement will cost over Rs. 2 lakh. The patient can be discharged in a day or two,” Dr. Prabhat said.
